Sometimes known as ‘East Friesland’, Salvia nemerosa ‘Ostfriesland’ is a lovely salvia, bearing spikes of violet-blue flowers from summer through to autumn. It’s perfect for growing towards the front of a sunny border, and is extremely popular with pollinators. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Grow Salvia nemerosa ‘Ostfriesland’ in well-drained soil in full sun. Protect plants from excessive winter wet and shelter from cold, drying winds. In colder regions it’s worth taking cuttings in late summer and early autumn to overwinter indoors. Alternatively grow in containers which you can move indoors in autumn.
