October’s Blog – Harvest time! Plus, how to care for your Skimmia

Dia duit!

Here’s what's happening in the Limerick Enable Ireland Garden Centre this month.

In the Polytunnel

It’s harvest time! The last couple of months' work in the polytunnel is now paying off. Our tomatoes, kale and salad crops are all ready to be picked. When harvesting your tomatoes, we recommend cutting the top of the plant so that it can focus its energy on ripening the lower fruit. Equally with your kale and salad crops, now is the time to pick the bigger leaves. This will help the rest of the plant continue to grow.

In the Garden

Our team has been busy preparing wintery hanging baskets for our customers. We always welcome customers to bring their baskets to our garden centre and we can create a gorgeous seasonal arrangement for you. Of course, we also have an array of baskets, pots, and planters you can buy if you don’t have your own at home. Pansies, Violas, and Primroses are popular plants for wintery hanging baskets as they are now in bloom. They’re perfect for bringing prolonged colour to your garden in the colder months. Blue and purple arrangements are our customers' favourites.

These plants are simple to care for. You can hang them anywhere. Just make sure to water them once a week if they don’t have natural access to water. It’s also good practice to deadhead them regularly. This will give new flowers the chance to bloom. Ensure you give each plant enough space when bedding them in a hanging basket. The hanging basket should become fuller within a week of planting.

New to our garden centre, we’re now offering more than 10 types of shrubs. Now is the ideal time to plant them. If you’re looking for autumnal colours of red and yellow for your borders, we recommend Pieris ‘Mountain fire’, Pieris ‘Bonfire’, Photinia ‘Red Robin’, or Pieris ‘Little Heath’. As the autumn season has started, there is no need to fertilise these plants until the spring. It’s best to water them regularly if in a dry spot. Then remove any dry leaves.

Our favourite seasonal shrub is Skimmia. Skimmia is a brilliant, low-maintenance, evergreen shrub. It is versatile and can tolerate partial or full shade. Here at the Enable Ireland Limerick Garden Centre, we have three types in stock. Skimmia ‘Finchy’ has panicles of small light green flower buds throughout the winter. Skimmia ‘Rubella’ has dark green leaves and red buds in the winter. Lastly, Skimmia Duo has vibrant red or white berries on the female plants. All three will bloom into fragrant creamy-white flowers come the spring.

To finish, here are some tips for getting the most out of your Skimmia:

1.        Grow you Skimmia in shade. They are hardy plants that can even tolerate deep shade.

2.        Skimmia’s prefer to be grown in neutral to acidic soils.

3.        They are great for borders and containers.

4.        There’s no need to feed them until spring!
